On June 1st the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Monash University Choral Society will come together to pay tribute to the 200th birthday of Giuseppe Verdi. Yet we are celebrating Verdi’s bi-centenary not with his greatest works but instead we offer a selection of works from those who influenced the great composer as well as those who he himself influenced.
We will perform the Easter Hymn and Intermezzo from by Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana; who also celebrates a significant anniversary of 150 years in 2013. Verdi’s own work will make one cameo appearance with the Va, piensero or Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from his famed opera Nabucco. Also the rarely performed Sinfonico Preludio by Puccini, which served as an examination piece submitted during his studies at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatorium of Milan.
To finish will be Rossini’s Stabat Mater, which was premiered just two months before Verdi had his first monumental success with the opera Nabucco in 1842 and was to serve as inspiration for Verdi’s Requiem in 1874.
Joining us will be Anna-Louise Cole singing soprano, Caroline Vercoe singing mezzo Soprano, Roy Best singing tenor and Nicholas Dinopoulos singing bass.
We hope you too can join us as we say “buon compleanno” to Verdi with this wonderful Italian Birthday Tribute.
Tickets are $25 full/$20 concession.
