John Hopkins Memorial Concert – singers needed!

Last year we were deeply saddened by the passing of John Hopkins, an integral member of the Melbourne music community for many years as well as a musical revolutionary around the world. On Sunday the 1st of June at 2pm in the South Melbourne Town Hall the Monash University Choral Society and the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform a joint concert to celebrate his life and work. This concert is to be called The Music Maker: a Tribute to John Hopkins. The concert will raise funds for the Rosemary and John Hopkins Award; so his legacy can continue to live on in the hearts of aspiring musicians and conductors.

Conducted by Patrick Burns, the concert program will include Elgar’s The Music Makers, Whitacre’s Sleep,  Sarah Hopkins’ Return to Joy, Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, Parry’s Jerusalem and many more.

We are very excited to be joined by special guests Liane Keegan, Hannah Dahlenburg, Margaret Haggart, Suzanne Johnston, Ian Cousins plus more to be announced and we want you to be involved.

Whether you have worked with John in the past, you’re a big fan, or you just want to be part of this amazing concert, we would love for you to sing with us.

If you are free on Tuesday evenings, we would love to have you at MonUCS rehearsals as soon as you’re available. We rehearse from 6:45-9:30pm in the Religious Centre (Building 9) of Monash University’s Clayton campus. If you cannot make it to our regular rehearsal, you are required to attend all the combined VYSO rehearsals (dates TBA) and the John Hopkins Memorial Minifest; a weekend of intensive rehearsal and optional social events. This will be held on Saturday the 17thand Sunday the 18th of May at Monash Clayton campus. Stay-over accommodation for those travelling from far away can be arranged.

Registration closes on Friday 2nd of May at 5pm; and there are limited places so get in fast!

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to us at committee@monucs.aicsa.org.au.

This is a not to be missed event. If you are unable to perform we would be delighted to see you in the audience. Bring friends and family as this will be a very memorable Sunday afternoon. For more information please join our mailing list and like us on Facebook.
