In 2013 we were deeply saddened by the passing of John Hopkins, an integral member of the Melbourne music community for many years as well as a musical revolutionary around the world. This June the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra and Monash University Choral Society will perform a joint concert to celebrate his life and work.
VYSO and MonUCS will be joined by Liane Keegan, Hannah Dahlenburg, Rosamund Illing, Margaret Haggart, Cherie Boogart, Michael Edwards, Raphael Wong, Ian Cousins and Steven Gallop for this not to be missed afternoon of music entitled The Music Maker – A tribute to John Hopkins. This very special program will include Elgar’s The Music Makers, Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, Sarah Hopkins’ Return to Joy, Eric Whitacre’s Sleep and Wagner’s Overture to Die Meistersinger and will be conducted by recent student of Hopkins, Patrick Burns.
Proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Rosemary and John Hopkins Award, so his legacy can continue to live on in the hearts of aspiring musicians and conductors.
